Steve's ON-30 Modules

There is a group of modelers here in the Pacific Northwest who are building On30 modules for display at the Bellevue WA  2012 Narrow Gauge Convention.   I am building four  modules that will depict a small mining town in the 1920's.   Three of the modules will represent (1) a small commercial district, (2) ore bins/loading station and (3) a small yard with A-frame turntable.  The fourth module will be a transition/junction module that will interface my non-standard modules with Official Pacific Northwest On30 Module Standard.  The Official Pacific Northwest On30 Module Standards can be found in the files section of PNW-On30-Modules, Yahoo Groups.

Basic Construction

Here are my first two modules.  The far module is 60" by 24".  The near  module is about 40" by 24" and designed to go around a 45 degree corner.  The next module will connect on the lower right side.  These modules were built from high quality 9-ply 1/2" Baltic Birch plywood with most of the design and construction  work done Russ Segner (I helped a little).  These modules are designed to be connected with C-Clamps.  The legs, made from Poplar, can be adjusted in length by about 2".

A Foam Foundation

The base is 2" thick sheet of "Pink" foam insulation board.  The under contstruction ore loading station is based upon the Silver King ore bins at Park City, UT.  The ore station is sitting on it's own piece of 2" removable foam.

The main track will pass behind the ore station on a 2% grade.  Woodland Scenics foam risers and incline sets are be used to change elevation.  The ore station and a warehouse will be on the lower level.  A depot, small hotel/bar/rooming house and a mining supply business will be on the upper level.

Chunks of pink foam have been placed around the module to mock up some terrain......I am going to have to scab on another 4-6" of width to get the look I want!
