Built by General Electric in 1928.  The 653 along with 654 were the last electric locomotives used on the SN working a short section of the railroad around Marysville and Yuba City, California.  They were replaced by diesels in 1964.  The 653 is currently at the Orange Empire Railway Museum.

The 652, 653 & 654 were popular locomotives on the SN.  They were quiet, with good visibility, and smooth running at higher speeds.  On the downside, they tended to be "slippery" when switching and/or starting heavy trains.
