2 Versions - Precision Craft  "Morning Daylight"

Broadway Limited 1953 #98/99 "Coast Daylight" - De-skirted Version

Southern Pacific Coast Daylight

Precision Craft and Broadway Limited have announced Southern Pacific "Daylight" Trains.  The cars and locomotives are currently planned for 2008.  The prototypes for the Precision Craft  were built by Pullman primarily for SP's Coast Daylight during 1940 and 1942.  The original "Daylight" cars were built in 1937 and the popularity of these trains dictated that the trains be expanded and reequipped almost immediately.  The original 1937 trains had only 12 cars.  By 1941, the train operated with up to 18 cars and by 1942 it went to a 20 car consist.  By 1946 the train dropped back to 18 cars until 1952 when it was again increased up to 20 cars during the Korean War,  Following the Korean War, the consists fluctuated and by the mid 1960's the train was down to an average of about 10 or 11 cars.  Around 1955, 3-unit diesels replaced the steam locomotives.  These and similar cars were used on other daylight trains to include the San Joaquin Daylight that operated over the famed Tehachapi Loop.  The Shasta Daylight was started in 1949 but was equipped with smooth side cars, with extra large windows, with the exception or the Parlor Observations.  The Parlor Observation corrugated side cars were ex Coast Daylight cars.  The Broadway Limited 1953 cars are de-skirted versions of the same cars.  During the 1950's the Southern Pacific began to remove the skirts providing better access to the mechanicals on the bottom side of the cars.

The Daylight's were equipped with unusual 2-unit articulated coaches and 3-unit articulated diners.  The typical mid/late 1940's Coast Daylight consisted of a locomotive (GS Class), a chair baggage, 3 2-unit articulated chair cars,  the 3-unit diner, a single chair, 2 more 2-unit articulated chair cars, a tavern car, a parlor car and a parlor observation for a total of 18 cars.  Several of the cars would be equipped with radio telephones.  During World War II, the tavern and parlor were replaced by additional chair cars.  In 1955 diesels replaced steam on the Coast Daylight.

The cars that Precision Craft and Broadway Limited will produce are listed below..
